  • Overview: Every legal sweepstakes must offer a free way to enter — usually by mail. Learn how AMOE mail-in entries work, what they cost, and when the postage is worth the odds....

Most sweepstakes players never notice the small print: no purchase necessary, and a free alternate method of entry is available. That free method is usually a mail-in entry, known as AMOE, and it exists because the law requires it. Every legal sweepstakes in the United States must offer a way to enter without buying anything, and for most online sweepstakes that way is a handwritten postcard or envelope sent by mail.

How it works is simple but specific. The official rules state exactly what to write on the card, usually your name, address, email and the sweepstakes name, and exactly where to send it. The rules also state the format: a standard postcard, a 3x5 card in an envelope, or a specific size. Follow the format exactly, because entries that do not match the rules are discarded. One card usually equals one entry, and the rules state the maximum number of mail-in entries per person, per day, or per entry period.

The cost is the postage and the time. A postcard stamp is cheap, but sending one entry a day for a month adds up to a few dollars plus the time to write and mail each card. Compare that with the online entry, which is free and takes seconds. Mail-in entries make sense in two situations: when the sweepstakes limits online entries but allows unlimited or generous mail-in entries, and when the prize is large enough that extra entries meaningfully change your odds. For a small daily prize, the postage is rarely worth it.

There are rules that trip people up. Many sweepstakes require handwritten entries, and printed labels or photocopied cards are rejected. Some require a specific envelope size or a return address in a particular format. Entries must arrive by the stated deadline, not just be postmarked by it, so mail early. And the entry limit applies across all methods: if the rules allow five entries a day total, five online entries plus five mail-ins is ten, and the extra five will be disqualified.

Bulk mail-in strategies exist, but they have limits. Some serious sweepers send dozens of postcards a week to high-value sweepstakes, treating postage as the price of extra chances. The maths can work when the prize is a car or a large cash sum and the mail-in limit is generous. It does not work when the prize is a 25 dollar gift card and the postage costs more than the expected value of the extra entries. Always calculate the expected value: prize value multiplied by your chance of winning, minus the postage. If the number is negative, stop.

The safest approach is to treat mail-in entries as a supplement, not a strategy. Enter online daily as your main routine, and add mail-in entries only for the biggest prizes with the most generous limits. Keep a simple log of what you sent and when, because the rules often limit entries per household and a duplicate can disqualify your whole household. And never pay a service to send mail-in entries for you: legitimate sweepstakes never require a paid entry service, and the ones that do are usually scams.

Mail-in entries are a reminder that sweepstakes are a game of odds, and the house always wins on average. The free entry exists to keep the game legal, not to make it profitable. Use it wisely on the prizes that matter, and skip it on the ones that do not.

Sweepstakes aggregator sites list the biggest current sweepstakes with their entry limits and end dates, and they save a lot of searching, but they are a starting point, not a shortcut: always read the official rules on the sponsor's own site before entering, because the aggregator's summary can be out of date. Keep a simple tracking sheet with the sweepstakes name, the entry limit, and the date you last entered, so you never accidentally exceed a limit and disqualify yourself. A five-minute daily routine, entering the same short list of sweepstakes, beats an hour of random entries once a month.
