Loyalty points feel like money in the bank until they vanish. Programs expire points for inactivity, for account closure, for program restructuring, and sometimes for reasons buried so deep in the terms that users never see them coming. The amounts lost are rarely huge individually, but across several programs they add up, and the loss is especially annoying because it is preventable. Understanding how expiry works and building two small habits protects nearly every point you earn.

Inactivity expiry is the most common mechanism: points expire after a set period, often ninety days to a year, without earning or redeeming activity. Some programs expire only the oldest points on a rolling basis, while others wipe the whole balance at once, so the same rule can have very different effects. Account closure is the second mechanism: closing an account, or having it closed for a terms violation, usually forfeits the balance immediately. Program changes are the third: when a program merges, rebrands, or shuts down, points may convert at a poor rate, expire on a deadline, or simply disappear.

The fourth mechanism is the quietest: devaluation. Your points do not expire, but the program raises redemption prices, so the same balance buys less. Devaluation is not expiry in the legal sense, but it has the same practical effect on your balance's value. Watching for devaluation announcements matters as much as watching expiry dates, because a program that doubles its gift card prices has effectively halved your balance. Programs are required to announce major changes in most jurisdictions, but announcements are easy to miss if you do not read program emails.

The first habit is redeeming early and often. Treat points like perishable goods: cash them out at the minimum threshold rather than saving for a bigger reward, because a redeemed gift card or payment is safe while an unredeemed balance is exposed to every expiry and devaluation risk. The second habit is a quarterly balance check: list every program you use, its balance, its expiry rule, and its next expiry date, and take a small earning or redeeming action in any program approaching a deadline. A single purchase, survey, or redemption resets most inactivity clocks.

Use a dedicated email address for loyalty programs so their messages do not drown in your main inbox, and actually read the ones announcing changes. Set calendar reminders for expiry dates on your largest balances, since those are the ones worth protecting. For programs you no longer use, redeem whatever is redeemable and close the account deliberately rather than letting it decay: a deliberate exit captures value that a slow expiry would destroy.

When choosing between programs, compare expiry rules alongside earn rates. A program that pays slightly less but never expires points can beat a generous program that wipes balances after ninety inactive days, especially for casual users. Look for programs that expire points on a rolling basis rather than wiping whole balances, that warn you before expiry, and that offer a grace action to preserve points. These design choices signal a program that treats your balance as yours rather than as a liability it hopes to erase.

Finally, keep perspective on what points are worth. A program's points are a marketing tool, not a savings account, and no balance is guaranteed forever. The right approach is to earn from programs tied to spending you already do, redeem promptly, check balances quarterly, and never let a large balance accumulate in a program you rarely use. Those four habits cost minutes a month and protect you from the quiet, cumulative loss that expiry rules are designed to produce.
