Prize scams work because they hijack excitement. A message arrives saying you have won thousands of dollars, a car, or a gift card, and the rush of winning short-circuits skepticism. The defense is simple and absolute: real prizes are free.

Scammers disguise payment as a tax, a processing fee, shipping and handling, customs duty, or an insurance charge. Legitimate sweepstakes never require winners to send money before receiving a prize, and payment requests via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency are especially damning.

Legitimate sweepstakes require an entry. If you do not remember entering a contest, be immediately suspicious, especially if the message comes from an unknown sender or a lookalike brand account.

Scammers create urgency: respond now or lose the prize, keep it secret, act before tonight. Legitimate sponsors give winners a reasonable window and a clear claims process, and they never ask you to keep a win secret.

No legitimate prize claim requires your bank login, credit card number, or Social Security number in an unsolicited message. A real high-value prize may eventually require eligibility confirmation through an official process, but only after you have verified the sponsor independently.

If you spot a prize scam, stop engaging, do not send money or information, and report it to the relevant consumer protection authority. If you already paid, contact your bank or payment provider immediately.

Prize scams disproportionately target older adults, who may be less familiar with digital verification and more likely to trust an official-sounding message. If an older relative mentions an unexpected win, help them check it before they respond: look up the sponsor independently, confirm whether they actually entered, and remind them that real prizes never require payment. A calm, non-judgmental conversation works far better than criticism, because embarrassment is one reason victims stay silent.

Practical protections help too. Set up call screening and spam filtering on their phone, show them how to check a sender's address, and agree on a simple rule: any prize message gets checked with a trusted family member before any reply. If a scam has already succeeded, act quickly: contact the bank or payment provider, report the fraud to the relevant consumer authority, and change any credentials that were shared. Speed matters, because some payment methods can still be reversed if reported promptly.

The rule to remember is short enough to repeat to anyone: real prizes are free, real sponsors verify through official channels, and real winners are never rushed. If a message breaks any part of that rule, stop, verify independently, and report it. That single habit protects you, and the people you share it with, from nearly every prize scam in circulation.
